The City of Central Falls was created on February 21,1895. The new city held its first elections on March 15, 1895 and the new government was established on March 18th. The First Mayor of Central Falls was Charles P. Moises. Mayor Moises nominated the officers for the first police department of the City of Central Falls.

The first police force of the city was comprised by: Chief of Police David R. Goldsmith; Sergeant Merril S. Louks; Patrolmen Samuel Harkness, James T. Hanrahan, Mason N. Bagley, Oliver Sylvester, Joseph Couture, Nelson B. Coombs, Joseph McCra, Napoleon Hebert, John Walsh, Joseph W. Whipple and William Stafford; Matron Miss Mary Fitz.

The first police headquarters was located in the fire station on Cross Street. Chief Goldsmith was in charge during the day, also assigned to his shift were two patrolmen. The day shift hours were from 6am to 6pm. The remaining officers were assigned to work the night shift with Sgt. Louks in charge. The night shift hours were from 6pm to 6am. There were no motor patrol or horse drawn vehicles available and on many occassions officers had to carry the drunks from the area of arrest to the jail house (bridewell).

The city continued to grow largely in part because of the mill importation from foreign countries. Central Falls began to draw people of different nationalities into an area that was already very congested. Police work became an everyday challenge for the police officers in the city. One of the challenges that these officers encountered was to deal with the segregation created by the many different cultural groups.

In 1914, The Central Falls Police Department moved its headquarter from it location on Cross street to a newly constructed building on Broad Street. The police department had exclusive use to the northern portion of the building. The second floor of the southern portion of the building served as the 11th District Court, which eventually became the 5th District Court.

In 1978, The Central Falls Police once again moved its headquarters from its location on Broad Street to 160 Illinois Street, where it is still currently located.

Presently, the Central Falls Police force is comprised of 40 men and women who continue to serve the community. The department currently holds the positions of chief, deputy chief, 3 captains, 4 lieutenants, and 6 sergeants. The officers who presently serve the city still face the challenges of serving a culturally diverse community.

This web site is dedicated to the officers who have served and continue to served the City of Central Falls. It is the dedication of these men and women that allows the Central Falls Police Department to grow in its rich history and tradition.
